Beyond the Demo: Dr. Tamar Atmajian on Extending the Classroom Through Immersive Learning

Following a recent middle-school fire-safety pilot, educator Dr. Tamar Atmajian reflects on how immersive learning can give students safe, hands-on experiences while remaining aligned with curriculum and instructional goals.
NucleusXR recently partnered with Dr. Tamar Atmajian and educators at a local Los Angeles middle school to develop and deliver an immersive fire-safety experience for students.
The pilot placed students inside a realistic household grease fire scenario where they could identify hazards, make decisions, and practice responding correctly without being exposed to real-world danger. For Dr. Atmajian, an educator and middle-school coordinator working with students in grades six through eight, the experience demonstrated how XR can help schools move learning beyond the textbook.
“It immerses them into an entire learning experience that they wouldn’t necessarily get out of a textbook. They can attempt to take risks without really having consequences that’ll affect their real life.”
Safe practice for real-world situations

Topics such as fire safety are difficult to teach through experience because recreating an emergency would be unsafe. Immersive learning provides an alternative: students can encounter realistic situations, follow guided procedures, and apply their knowledge in a controlled environment.
During the pilot, Dr. Atmajian observed that students were focused on understanding how to respond to the fire and how to do so correctly. Rather than only recalling information, they were asked to make decisions within a scenario that could realistically occur in their lives.
That ability to connect instruction with application is central to how NucleusXR approaches immersive learning. XR is not intended to replace educators, classroom instruction, or established learning materials. Instead, it can give students new opportunities to practice, explore, and demonstrate what they have learned.
“It’s not a replacement to the educational process,” Dr. Atmajian said. “It’s a tool that we’re using 10 or 15, 20 minutes a day to do a task or do an activity.”
Curriculum first, technology second
For immersive learning to provide lasting value, it must support the curriculum rather than distract from it.
Dr. Atmajian emphasized the importance of connecting XR activities directly to learning standards, assessments, and instructional objectives. Students can remain focused on the material they need to learn while engaging with it through a more interactive and hands-on format.
That same principle guided the development of the fire-safety module. Educators contribute their subject-matter expertise, instructional materials, and understanding of student needs. NucleusXR provide the technical expertise, development framework, and implementation support required to transform those materials into an immersive scenario.
“As subject-matter experts, we are experts in our subject matter and not necessarily the technology,” Dr. Atmajian explained. “While we brought out the instructional materials, they coupled it with their technology expertise, and we came together to build the pilot program.”
Throughout the process, the NucleusXR team provided development guidelines, responded to questions, supported the educators, and remained present during the student sessions.
More than a one-time VR experience
While one-off VR demonstrations can introduce students to immersive technology, sustainable adoption requires more than a single experience.
“Schools need sustainable tools and not just things that are new. It’s important for a platform like this to have educators build the content and build upon it, not just focus on one thing.”
NucleusXR is being developed as a complete immersive learning platform rather than a collection of isolated modules. It brings together the tools organizations need to create and manage scenarios, deliver learning experiences, support administrators and learners, evaluate performance, and use analytics to inform future instruction.
This platform-based approach allows schools to begin with a focused use case, such as fire safety, and expand over time as their curriculum, educators, and immersive-learning programs evolve.
Expanding immersive learning across subjects
Following the pilot, educators expressed interest in using NucleusXR across a wider range of subject areas, including English, history, science, mathematics, engineering, and social-emotional learning.
Dr. Atmajian highlighted the potential for students to enter historical environments, experience settings from novels, interact with characters, and explore places that may otherwise require expensive or inaccessible field trips.
XR cannot replace every physical experience, but it can make experiential learning available to more students. A classroom may not be able to transport every learner to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, or another historically significant location. Immersive technology can bring elements of those environments into the classroom and allow students to engage with them directly.
“I think immersive learning is one of those tools that is not going to go away. It’s a really effective tool in the classroom, especially for focus and engagement, as we saw with the kids in the pilot.”
