Noorcon
considers
the
following
aspects
when
carrying
out a
web
portal
project:
 |
Staff in different departments require
totally different and distinct data, which
is about customization. Customization also
ensures both that they do not miss
anything, and that they are not
overwhelmed with irrelevant information.
|
 |
Different people with
the same role, work differently, which
requires personalization.
|
 |
Users need direct
access to the information required for
their daily work while usability must
cater to speed and user friendliness.
|
 |
For security reasons,
users access the data they are entitled to
with centralized control mechanism (single
sign on, connect once - access
everywhere).
|
 |
Collection and
propagation of data helps in the process
of making better-informed management
decisions.
|
 |
Business applications
can interact via the Portal, (e.g. the
skill-base information system with the
Personnel database) and data can then be
passed via the portal using federation.
|
 |
Business intelligence
portals : corporate portals that enable
users to access and produce reports for
decision-making using enterprise-wide
databases.
|
 |
Content portals focus
on documents only.
|
 |
Knowledge Management
portals: focus only on knowledge
management (Collaboration and Document
Management) with no application
integration features.
|
 |
Federated portals for
corporations requiring a de-centralized
network of inter-working portals, i.e.
accessing the same content sources and
sharing the same levels of security.
|
 |
Horizontal enterprise
portals provide broad access to many types
of repositories and generic
application-integration features.
Horizontal enterprise portals service the
needs of an entire community of users with
no business functionality included.
|
 |
Vertical enterprise
portals focus on a specific application or
business function or the collaboration for
employees. They are usually associated
with packaged applications.

The Process
Noorcon uses The Unified Process. The Unified Process recognized the importance of customer communication and streamlined methods for describing the customer's view of the system. It suggest a process flow that is iterative and incremental, providing the evolutionary feel that is essential in modern software development.
The Unified Process Overview
The following is a list of phases of the Unified Process and relates them to some of the activities performed during each phase:
Inception Phase: encompasses both customer communication and planning activities. By collaborating with the customer and end users, business requirements for the software are identified, a rough architecture for the system is proposed, and a plan for the iterative, incremental nature of the ensuing project is developed.
Elaboration Phase: encompasses the customer communication and modeling activities. Noorcon refines and expands the preliminary use cases that were developed as part of the inception phase and expands the architectural representation to include five different views of the software.

The Implementation Model |

 |
The Deployment Model |
|
 |
| |
|
Construction Phase: Using the architectural model as input, the construction phase develops or acquires the software components that will make each use case operational for the end user.
Transition Phase: Software is given to the client and end users for beta testing and user feedback reports both defects and necessary changes. In addition, Noorcon creates the necessary support information (e.g., user manuals, troubleshooting guides, installation procedures, etc...) that are required for the release.
Production Phase: During this phase Noorcon and the client monitor the ongoing use of the software, provide support for the operating environment, and defect reports and change requests are submitted and evaluated.

| How Corporations Use Virtual Worlds |
 |
 |
Visionary international corporations – Michelin, IBM, Xerox, Saint-Gobain Glass -- have established and grown significant presences on the Second Life Grid. These organizations have built spaces in Second Life Grid in some of these ways:
- Hold in-person meetings without leaving the office, using real-time 3D collaboration
- Construct product and process simulations so employees and business collaborators from all over the world can test new designs and concepts
- Conduct employee training especially one-on-one training
- Meet with global partners at your virtual headquarters
- Receive product feedback from clients
- Build community around your brand
Facing the challenges of managing and encouraging communications and collaboration within and among global operations, they recognized that the Second Life Grid offers improved organizational performance and reduced operating costs.

| How Other Organizations (University and Non-Profits) Use the Second Life Grid |
 |
 |
The Second Life Grid platform provides a powerful platform for interactive experiences. Over 200 educators from nearly as many universities and colleges use it for classes, research, learning and projects with their students, bringing a new dimension to learning.
A large, active education community is engaged in the Grid. Harvard University, Texas State University, and Stanford University have set up virtual campuses where students can meet, attend classes, and create content together. Below are just some examples of various organizations that have incorporated the Second Life Grid in their educational programs. The links below take you to the in-world campuses of these universities. You'll need a Second Life account to visit and see what they are doing.

Educational institutions can use the Second Life Grid to create a safe environment to enhance experiential learning, allowing individuals to practice skills, try new ideas, and learn from their mistakes. Prepare your students or employees for real-world experiences by using Second Life as a simulation!
Students and educators can work together on the Second Life Grid from anywhere in the world as part of a globally networked virtual classroom environment. Using the Second Life Grid as a supplement to traditional classroom environments also provides new opportunities for enriching an existing curriculum.

Government Uses of Virtual Worlds
Government presences on the Second Life Grid |
 |
 |
Many government agencies and departments, including military organizations, at all levels around the world use virtual worlds on the Second Life Grid™ for a variety of programs and activities.
FFor instance, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) have a facility that provides interactive educational demonstrations about the ocean and weather. Visitors can ride submarines, experience a tsunami, or check out real-time weather maps.
The following links will take you to profiles on the Second Life wiki containing their own links to demonstration sites and downloadable background information.
